(More customer reviews)Hatachi SimpleNet NAS USB to Ethernet promises a truly simple way to connect a USB storage device to your home network via wired Ethernet connected to your home router. Setup and control is managed through an internal web server accessible through Apple's Bonjour (zero configuration networking) software. No MAC (Media Access Control) address in included on the box so installation of Bonjour for windows ([...]) is mandatory. Apple Mac users have Bonjour built-in to OS X through Safari.
All of this innovation as well as the small form factor induced me to purchase the device and set it up for use with both USB thumb drives as well as a Western Digital external USB storage device.
As promised SimpleNet connected to the disk / flash subsystems and made the storage accessible over my home network via Bonjour. However in about 10 minutes the plastic box housing SimpleNet became very warm. At that time the disk / flash subsystems were no longer network accessible. The internal web broswer's setup pages then became blank and no longer displayed information.
Removing the power (supplied through an included 5 volt adapter) for twenty minutes to permit the device to cool again allowed me to connect to my storage, but only after repeating the setup process. Clearly this became tedious.
Note that no paper manual is provided and the mini disk containing the manual and Bonjour for Windows software is only compatible with tray drives CD readers.
Sadly it's back to the store with this device. It would have been a great way to create a NAS (Network Attached Storage) system to a home or small business network. I hope they try again, but first do the beta testing in the lab.

(More customer reviews)It came preinstalled in my Dell E1505. It works virtually in every Wi-Fi you might find. I tested it in 802.11n 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies and works great.
Important: Make sure you get the latest drivers. When I purchased the computer back on February 2007, I had to disable the 802.11n and use 802.11g because the technology was new and the compatibility with my Airport Extreme was bad. Eventually, both the router and the Intel card got firmware updates and worked just fine.

(More customer reviews)I have had 2 devices from SonicWall - what everyone MUST understand is the simple fact that these devices (all from SonicWall) are only supported for 1 year after purchase. What people get angry about is that these devices go bad - they are not like your VCR/DVD player that just work - and work reliable for years to come all the time. It is hit or miss.
This means you MUST buy the subscription if you want to have a working device for the length of the device. This is because they consider Firmware (yes software for the device) a maintenance issue requiring a subscription. Even if it fixes one of the numerous bugs these devices inevitably have. So expect to pay 500 for the device, then a hundred or so every year to have the privilege of getting bug fixes for the dam thing. The problem people have is that all other appliances do not need these "fixes" in there house to run.... or the simple fact that Windows and other OS's give free service packs (which is what these are)
I have had the SOHO 2/3 and now the TZ 170. I am on my 2nd TZ because of the wireless randomly dropping all my clients throughout the day.
If you have support agreement - expect to be run through the India call centers for all support - and expect a 3-4 call process to get to the point they send you a new device. Each call takes 20 minutes to get to a person (the first person simply takes your name and directs you to a support person - that's all - so don't get excited when you hear a voice immediately.. the waiting is ahead). Afterwards it varries but I have had call times in upwards of 2 hours.
Buyer beware - support still has a long way to go.

(More customer reviews)First of all, the current picture of a black hub is mistaken - the box looks like the other current linksys routers / hubs with the bright blue and black plastic box design.
That having been said, this hub worked perfectly out of the box. It is used to network among machines running Windows 98, Windows 2000, and Linux, using a variety of ethernet cards (3Com, Linksys, NetGear). It has been used several weeks now without a problem. Setup took minutes!
Besides this item, I have bought and used several Linksys products before, including several 4-port hubs, a 4-port router, PC network cards and a laptop card. All of these have worked flawlessly with the other network equipment I have used. In some cases they replaced an item that cost 3-6 times more yet did not work as well!
I noticed some other users have had issues with this product, so here are a few pointers about networking that might help:
1) Hubs allow computers to talk to connect to each other on a local network. All a hub does is allow a computer which is set up to be on the network to talk to another computer.
2) To create a local network that can talk to the internet, you either need to buy an IP address for every machine and use a hub, or use a router to allow multiple computers on the internal network to look to anyone on the internet as having a single IP address. (Don't forget the cable/DSL connection & modem.)
3) The maximum speed that the hub supports may be 100 Mbps, but the speed is limited by the speed of the ethernet card as well! Some ethernet cards are only rated for 10Mbps - so that is the maximum connection speed you'll get using them.

Belkin HSM Wrls. G Notebook Card ( F5D7011 ) Review

(More customer reviews)My original Belkin F5D7010 ver 3000 card died in Mac OS X 10.4, Tiger. This version uses the Ralink chipset, and there is no currently available software for this card with Tiger (see my F5D7010 review).
I then purchased this F5D7011 card, which utilizes the Broadcom chipset (as in AirPort cards), and it it works in Tiger using the AirPort software in my Powerbook G4 (DVI, 667MHz). Oddly, the normal 'AirPort Setup Assistant' application did not work, but the 'AirPort Setup Assistant for Graphite or Snow' hooked up just fine.
Others have claimed similar success with F5D7010 ver 1000 or 2000, which also utilize the Broadcom chipset. These should also work in Tiger, but I have not tried these directly and cannot confirm the findings.
I'm very happy with the new setup. No more buggy Ralink software, and wireless access while in OS X 10.4. Hope this works for you too.

(More customer reviews)At least when paired with the Netgear WGT624 WAP/Router this card does indeed have a significant farther range than for instance the DLINK 614+ was was currently using. I can go from one corner of the house downstairs to a bedroom at the opposite corner of the house upstairs, on a waterbed at almost full speed (this gave the DLINK some trouble).
It also comes with a nifty utility that does a better job than Windows with settings and statistics (like actual network throughput).
One minor issue may be with how hot this card gets which is always a concern with a laptop. To the cards credit there are settings for Power Save and Transmit Power which may help.

(More customer reviews)I manage the wlan at work and test numerous cards. The Cisco 350 series is what we rolled of company wide for for employee use. The Client software (ACU) included with the card is straight forward and provides great info on the current connection and link status.
One thing you can do with this card that you can't with others is modify the transmit power for the card. The primary difference between the Cisco 340 and 350 series is the transmit power. On the 350 you can change this from 1mw to 100mw (the 340 series peaks at 30mw). This feature is especially handy, especially when taking my laptop from work to home (you just don't need 100mw of transmit power in a 1200 ft. apartment).
The hardware is great (Cisco acquired Aironet around 97 I think), the software is intuitive, and is fully compatible with many authentication methods other than wep (i.e., TLS, MD5, EAP, LEAP).
So why did I give this card a 4 star rating instead of 5 stars? Three reasons:
Client side software does not roam between discontiguous networks when using advanced authentication
Client side software does not include any kind of sniff feature to see what wireless networks are within range. I have to use third party software for that.
Cisco cards do not do true rfmon passive packet acquisition. Cisco (and I think Lucent) diverged from the prism 2 chip , so i keep my Cisco card for work and keep a linksys wpc11 (prism2 chipset) for "network analysis".

(More customer reviews)Usually you should discount reviews complaining about problems with a computer add-on: they say more about the reviewer and their systems, perhaps, then they do about the product you are trying to evaluate. I think, though, that some aspects of my experience might be generalizable, maybe even applicable to your situation.
I have been a satisfied user of D-Link wireless products for over three years now. I upgraded to the 802.11g products (WAP and PCI cards) a year ago to a run a network of up to five computers, usually three Win XP or Win 2000 workstations and two notebooks. As I look around my office, though, I see boxes full of failed or problematic routers, WAPs, and cards. It seems, although I have only just realized the extent of it, that these D-Link products all fail with remarkable regularity. In the past, I have just routinely replaced them: that's how much I have liked their ease of use and their performance.
Well, that's over with my latest purchase: the DWL-G520 adapter (my second). It taught me two disturbing things about D-Link wireless. First, the adapter can really screw up your system. This one's driver (regardless of the update version) consumes 90+ percent of a very high-powered CPU. (Windows XP Home, all the latest updates, etc.) It has brought an essential machine to its knees by hugely slowing down everything it does. Disabling the adapter (which solves the problem, at the price of disconnecting me from the world) brings on the fabled Blue Screen of Death. The second disturbing thing is that D-Link support simply has not responded to e-mail messages, period. Their Web site lies when it promises 36 hour response. I can cope--I have a strong background in computing and can devise temporary workarounds--but I shudder to think how uncomfortable this behavior would make most people feel.
Those are the proverbial three strikes: consistently short times to failure, occurrence of really bad driver behavior, and hopelessly bad support. My relationship with D-Link is over; I will have to try some other vendor's offering. If you don't mind the risk of having a similar experience, and think you can cope with absolutely no support, then by all means consider this product. I hope and trust, though, that you (and I) can do better with a different vendor.

If you are trying to integrate your Mac OS X system to print to the Netgear PS101, there is a solution: configure your Mac for IP printing, set the printer type to LPD/LPR, enter the print server IP address, input the queue name, example HPLASER4L_P1 (netgear device name_printer port), and make sure you select the right printer model. If you select Generic or any other model than your printer you will waste paper. I hope this is helpful...

(Both are still running fine on someone elses desk)
This is the best yet and I am sure there are even better ones to come.
This one is dual core, has gigabit LAN, and no fan at all is required.
It can use 4GB (2x2GB) of DDR2-800 RAM so it will work well with Windows 7.
I am using it with XP Pro and it does everything I need it to do.
It is stable and fast enough for drafting, word processing, and photo editing.
I wouldn't expect it to be used for editing video except occasionally.
The onboard video looks good to me.
I do wish it had HDMI and/or a DVI connector which it lacks.
It has a flash interface, 4 rear, abd 2 front USB ports which is handy.
For hardware hackers and folks with legacy hardware there are still headers to attach parallel and serial connectors.
That's getting rarer these days.
This is a great little board if you are not a mega-gamer or do a lot of video editing.
It is stable, reliable and relatively inexpensive, and it sips power compared to most rigs.
I have it in an Apex M008 mITX case, with a 320GB WD 3.5" HD, 4GB of OCZ Gold DDR2-800, and a Samsung DVD writer.
The 4GB is not necessary if you are running XP or even Windows 7 for most folks.
2GB is plenty and would use less power. For XP 1GB might be adequate.

(More customer reviews)I have purchased Linksys products in the past and other than the fact that it took 3 tries before I finally received a working DSL/Cable Router, I have always been pleased with the performance but the technical support was a complete joke.
I decided after reading the reviews on Amazon.Com and other sites that I would spend the extra $10 and go SMC because of it's ease of installation and tech support.
I purchased the Linksys PCMCIA card as part of my wireless solution and it took less than 5 minutes from opening the box to surfing on the web to get it and the wireless acces point up and running. The speed performance is beyond expectations. I have the basic cable modem attached to a Linksys DSL/Cable router and plugged the SMC Wireless hub into one of my available Linksys ports and that was it.
I made the choice to go the SMC route after vowing never again to deal with the inept "Hope Desk" offered by Linksys. If you had any thoughts about buying Linksys, think again. SMC is THE way to go.

Buffalo Technology Network USB 2.0 Print Server LPV3-U2 Review

(More customer reviews)Although I've never heard of Buffalo Technology before (http://www.buffalotech.com) I decided to purchase this product because there was at least some confirmation from others that it would work with Apple OS X. Linksys was my first choice but they don't claim any Mac support at all for their PSUS4 server so I gave up on them.
Anyway when this product arrived I was determined to install it using only my Mac and not resorting to one of my Windows systems because it seemed that most people were having difficulties on the Mac side. The manual section for Mac is completely wrong, so ignore it. Here's what I did:
1. Unpack, plug in to printer, network and lastly plug in the power.
2. I have a DHCP server in my network router which for me means devices get assigned IP addresses from a pool starting with 192.168.0.xxx. Go to your router configuration web page and find the address of the print server device. If you don't have a DHCP server the device will be at IP address 192.168.11.222 according to the manual.
3. Bring up Safari and type in the address, e.g. http://192.168.0.123. It will ask you for a username/password. The username is 'root' and the password is empty by default. If you see the printer configuration page then you have confirmed the device is working. You can come back to this page to mess with settings if you know what you are doing.
4. Go to System Preferences, click on Print & Fax. Click on '+'. I'm running OS X Leopard which shows a window with a toolbar with a Default button on the left. You should see 'P1' in the list of printers.
5. Ignore the default setting for 'Print Using' and look for the closest match to your printer in the list of Gutenprint drivers. I have a Canon PIXMA iP3500, so I selected 'Canon PIXMA iP3100'
6. Close the Preferences windows and open TextEdit. Type something in an select File Print... and press Print. You should see the Print Queue window and after a few seconds you should see your document print.
Piece of cake! On the Windows side of things don't bother installing the supplied software. It just confuses things. Unlike the Mac installation you couldn't do the Windows one without consulting the manual. Sadly, Windows has became a torturous maze of dialog boxes. Ready? On Windows XP do the following:
1. Go to Control Panel, Printers and Faxes, Add Printer... then click Next
2. Select Local Printer (don't ask) and uncheck the 'Automatically detect (blah)' option
3. Select 'Create New Port', then 'Standard TCP/IP Port'.
4. Next wizard... Type in the IP address from above, and then type over the printer port/name that got unhelpfully filled in for you (remember it is P1 by default)
5. On the next page select 'Generic Network Card'. Yes, I was shaking my head at this point too.
6. After clicking OK on the next very big message box, and a brief intermission, select your printer driver.
7. Print a test page and if all is well you should be up and running.
Despite the nuttiness of the operating systems this is a great device. I hope the company comes through it's current legal troubles and continues to produce great products like this.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this card with a D-Link DI-624 router/WAP; as a pair, they perform flawlessly, and offer the advertised performance, which is on-par with wired Ethernet.
Compatibility of this card with other access points was good in my testing. It connected just fine to all the WAPs I normally use (all of which are B protocol), and offered the expected performance.
The only complaint I have is that I attempted to install the card using the latest drivers from D-Link, downloaded from their web site. Despite carefully matching the hardware revision of my card with the offered download, my attempts to use the card failed. The drivers installed fine, but it would not "sniff" any wireless networks (there were two within range), including one a few feet away.
After uninstalling the downloaded drivers, and using the earlier version supplied on CD with the card, it fired-up just fine, and operated perfectly.
Unfortunately, this is something I've encountered before with D-Link products, both with device drivers (as for this card) and with firmware updates for various D-Link products I've owned. It's not always the best advice to stay fully current on updates, as they occasionally introduce anomalies. If you're technically inclined, this is a minor annoyance that can be dealt with using a combination of patience and judicious back-ups. Average users may not have as much tolerance for this as I do.
With the installation stabilized, I find myself quite satisfied with the DWL-G650, and definitely recommend it -- though less technical users should stick to the drivers on the packaged CD.
