(More customer reviews)I have the D-Link DIR-655 router (I upgraded from a Netgear FWG114P), and one by one have been upgrading my wireless adapters (almost all Netgear) to D-Link adapters. While the Netgear WG111v2 worked fine and supported WPA2, it's limited to 54G speeds (forget the WG111v1 and WG511--no WPA there). When I saw the DWA-142 selling for less than some of my older adapters I jumped, even though there are more recent adapters from D-Link made specifically for the DIR-655.
Here's the deal--properly configure your router, and in the case of the DIR-655 set it to use a bandwidth of 20-40MHz. At the client, install the most recent driver for the DWA-142 (version 130). Connect the adapter, then disable the D-Link Wireless Connection Manager from the Startup folder and use XP's Zero Wireless Utility to configure the DWA-142. Reboot as necessary. Make sure you have matching security codes at the router and the adapter and pay attention to whether it's shared or not, and whether you're using WPA-PSK AES or TKIP (same for WPA2). Be sure to check your PC's SERVICES (services.msi) to make sure you haven't disabled the Zero Wireless Utility and/or any other networking services if you can't get things running.
A few notes: the system works MUCH better with WPA encryption than with WEP--signal levels are stronger and speeds are faster. Placement of the adapter is important, so watch your signal on your router's status screen while you move it around. I get a consistent 300Mbps on all machines within a 100' radius through 2 floors and several walls (I do have D-Link's external antenna for the router, but that didn't help all that much). Even at the most distant point--basement to second floor, end to end of the house--I get above 200Mbps since I went to WPA-PSK, even though I have to set the router to N-G mode since some clients still run 54G. Also, some adapters can't see hidden SSIDs (like the WG511), so make your router unhidden until you're finished installing everything.
Lastly, while you can leave DHCP on for visiting laptop users, employ fixed IP addresses for permanent PCs on your LAN (wired and wireless). It simply works better. Keep a log and make sure you don't assign more than one machine the same address.
This is the most stable setup I've used in nearly 10 years of wireless networking, and I've used everything from Intel's Anypoint to Netgear MA101's, WG121's, WG511's, and so forth. For a notebook with a PCMCIA slot, get the DWA-652 PCMCIA adapter and run it in WPA mode--it simply will not run over 54Mbps with WEP encryption.
When I say stable, the router has not locked up ONCE in the months since I installed it, which was not the case when I began overloading the Netgear FWG114P--it caused me to take a trip to the basement once a day (or more).

Intel Wifi Link 5300 Review

(More customer reviews)I bought the Intel WiFi Link 5300 card to replace the stock card in my Dell Mini 9 netbook. The stock card is b/g only and gave me a lot of trouble associating with my home router. The Intel card arrived promptly and included the Intel ProSet 12 software on CD (though I had already downloaded an updated version from Intel's web site). The card and software installed easily.
The Mini 9 has only two antennas (I have a third on order) so I initially connected the two to the 1 and 2 terminals on the Intel card. It worked well and gave me a strong signal in my house, though sometimes the Wireless N connection was weak. I am sure the third antenna will help with that. No problem associating with my access point and the speed is great.
An easy upgrade if you are dissatisfied with the wireless solution in your netbook or notebook that uses a Mini-PCIe connector. Just make sure that the card size is correct - Intel makes one that's even smaller, but the Dell Mini 9 took this size.
Edit: As I predicted, adding the third antenna brought back the N performance. I'm now running Windows 7 on the Mini 9 and it recognized the Intel 5300 and operates it without the need for additional drivers or the Intel ProSet software, though the software does give you more information about how the card is performing. I'm very happy with the 5300.
Edit 9/30/09 - I've been getting lots of questions about where I obtained the third antenna and how it is installed. The antenna I used is made by Tyco and is typically sold in a pack of two. Amazon doesn't sell it, but if you search eBay for "tyco minipci" you will find many for sale. The pack is typically less than $10. Each antenna consists of a large square foil area, backed by adhesive, and a smaller section with an S-shaped foil trace, which is the actual, radiating part of the antenna. The only difference between the two antennae in the pack is the length of the lead, so pick the one that works best for you.
For best results, the antenna would be mounted inside the display lid of your notebook/netbook, positioned so that the S-shaped trace is not blocked by the LCD panel or metal shielding. It's ok for the adhesive-backed section to be blocked as this is just a "ground plane". The antenna should be as high up on the lid as you can manage, though I've heard from some who just let it lay flat inside the base of their PC and they say it "works fine".
The connectors used are standard but are somewhat fragile. Pull them straight up from the card and push straight down, taking care to align the plug correctly. You may find that long-nose pliers help (but don't squeeze too hard.)
Note that the Intel 5100 card is very similar to the 5300 except that it does not support the 3x3 mode with the very highest transfer rates (and uses only two antennae.) You may find that the 5100 is more than adequate for your needs, especially if your wireless router itself doesn't support the 3x3 mode (few do.)
One more point - both the 5100 and 5300 support Intel's "My WiFi" technology which lets you share Internet access with local WiFi devices. This requires the Intel ProSet driver and application which can be downloaded from Intel's web site - read more details on Intel's site.

SonicWALL TZ 170 Wireless 10-Node Firewall (01-SSC-5710) Review

I am an IT consultant and I want to start off by saying that I really like the Sonicwall products that I have worked with before (wired firewall/routers). This is the reason, in fact, that I recommended this product to a client when they said that they wanted a secure Wi-Fi solution for the Tablet PC's they were buying for their office.
From the first day working with the product I regretted my recommendation.
Setup was easy, even not using the built-in wizards. But after setting things up for a bit I realized that the router was bound and determined to put the wired and wireless computers onto different subnets and that there was no way to change this behavior. That would not have been a problem, except that there is no way to allow those two subnets to communicate with each other (not on a workgroup anyway) unless you use Sonicwall's VPN software to create a VPN from the wireless client to the router and then to the wired network. In fact, the built-in firewall blocks communications between the subnets by default, but even after disabling this (and checking the box that said to "allow Windows networking") the two subnets still couldn't see each other.
I looked on Sonicwall's forum's (which you only have access to after purchasing and registering a product) and found that this is a common problem with no real answers except to use Sonicwalls VPN client (there were other answers given, but none of them worked). The best I could figure the problem was with name resolution, the firewall could be set to "allow" NetBios packets through from one subnet to another, but there was no evidence that the router was actually forwarding those packets. I assume that the subnets could communicate using another name-resolution system, but DNS wasn't available on my client's workgroup :). My clients pretty much needed the Wi-Fi network for Internet access, and didn't use it much anyway, so this didn't bother them and we just left things as they were.
My clients only used the Tablet PC's occasionally for the first couple of months and had connection problems off and on, it was usually a matter of resetting the router, and everything was fixed. Then, in about the third month of owning the router, they began using the Tablet PC's more often and had constant connection problems. I went in to diagnose the problem, thinking that the problem might be the tablets as they were identifying the router as an unsecure connection (it was WPA/TKIP). I made sure that Windows and all drivers were updated. I tried to connect to the router when standing right next to it, but was unable. I discovered that my PDA also identified the connection as unsecured. I made sure that the router had the latest updates and then I checked its logs and discovered that it had been reporting several errors:
1. It would say that it couldn't create an association with the client trying to connect, but then, immediately afterward, would say that the client had been authenticated. (The client wasn't connected)
2. It would say that the clients were using a kind of encryption that it didn't understand (or somesuch).
3. It said, at least once, that too many clients were connected to the router (even though there were only five computers in the office and the thing is licensed for ten), so it couldn't accept any more connections. It said this when reporting elsewhere that there were only three computers connected (one of which was not actually connected at the time).
I unplugged the router and plugged it back in and the tablets connected immediatley. I went to the Sonicwall forums and found that problems like this were quite common (as were stories of consultants with clients angry about this). It seems that the thing "freaks out" on a fairly regular basis and then just drops connections and doesn't let them re-connect.
I had already spent several hours confirming that it was the router that was at fault and so, at this time, I recommended to my client that they get rid of this and buy a D-Link for $50. They did, it worked without a hitch.
I've already done several hours of free work for them trying to get my recommendation to work and now I'm trying to return the router for my client, so they aren't out $450 (or I'm not out $450, since I recommended the thing). I called Sonicwall and was forwarded to sales and then to the "account manager for my territory" who basically told me that there isn't a darn thing that Sonicwall will do for me and kept trying to get me to talk to tech support (even after I told him that my client had purchased a new router that was working just fine), but I already spent so many hours pinning the problem on the router and wasting my client's time, and my clients were already so frustrated with the thing (and, by proxy, me) that I don't want to spend a couple of more hours trying to fix this very badly put-together product (it was noted a few times in the forums that this appears to be just a normal Sonicwall firewall/router with Wi-Fi slapped on as an afterthought) and frustrating my clients any further (and shutting down their network again). He said that there was nothing that Sonicwall could do about it and that I have to return the product to Amazon who, I think he said, will then try to pass it back to their Sonicwall reseller and they will, I think, consult Sonicwall support, so my client may or may not get any money back. I wasn't sure on those last two bits.
One way or another, this guy was wayyyy more concerned about getting me to keep the router than satisfying a consultant who has been responsible for the sale of several of his company's products. A mistake that I won't make again.

(More customer reviews)I have purchased Linksys products in the past and other than the fact that it took 3 tries before I finally received a working DSL/Cable Router, I have always been pleased with the performance but the technical support was a complete joke.
I decided after reading the reviews on Amazon.Com and other sites that I would spend the extra $10 and go SMC because of it's ease of installation and tech support.
I purchased the Linksys PCMCIA card as part of my wireless solution and it took less than 5 minutes from opening the box to surfing on the web to get it and the wireless acces point up and running. The speed performance is beyond expectations. I have the basic cable modem attached to a Linksys DSL/Cable router and plugged the SMC Wireless hub into one of my available Linksys ports and that was it.
I made the choice to go the SMC route after vowing never again to deal with the inept "Hope Desk" offered by Linksys. If you had any thoughts about buying Linksys, think again. SMC is THE way to go.

(More customer reviews)I bought another one of these to repeat my existing 900AP+'s signal to extend the range of my wireless network. It works great since I set it all up 2 weeks ago. I am not able to go all the way out to my backyard by the pool and still have Internet access on my laptop. This is very convenient when swimming or just laying and you get the urge to look something up on the Internet, but usually you don't because the PC is so far away. Not anymore. I am now able to bring my laptop out with me and maybe watch a DVD outside while I BBQ or just drink with my friends.
The repeater function looks like it only repeats other D-Link products. It also brings the speeds down to 11Mbps when you are connected to the network via the repeater. If you can get a signal with the main AP, then you are able to maintain your 22Mbps speeds.
Everything else about this AP has worked great for me as well and I'd highly recommend it.

(More customer reviews)I was a little worried when I bought this extender, but I was pleasantly surprised when I got it set up and working. Installation is pretty straight forward and the best part is that it will work with non-USRobotics Access Points (like my Asus WL-500g Deluxe). Be aware that not all extenders (like the Linksys) will work with APs that aren't from the same manufacturer. I was having a problem getting signal to a new Squeeze box located on a different floor but adding this little box did the trick.
One note on the install: if your AP is set not to broadcast it's SSID (usually not set by default), you might have a problem finding it even if you enter its MAC address into the extender's configuration. I simply re-enabled the SSID broadcast, found the AP, configured the extender and then disabled SSID broadcast again.

(More customer reviews)An earlier review stated "this hub only appears to provide half-duplex support".This is part of the definition of a hub vs a switch, thus the product is not flawed. A switch will provide full duplex and is more appropriate for multiple high bandwidth devices. If you're attempting to decide HUB vs SWITCH, do a google search before you buy.
I have been a fan of Netgear products since they were originally under BayNetworks. They make high quality devices, attractive design, and they normally offer long warranties. This product is no different. I've had it serving up a couple of machines now for over a year without incident. It's remained on 24 hours / 365 days and performs nicely.
The only downside I've seen with Netgear is their on going support (Firmware upgrades, etc.). Obvisouly that won't be an issue with this device, but something to consider if your also looking at them to provide a router solution. Also, the power adaptors seem to go a little too often.
All and all, this is a great hub and wonderful price. I can think of no reason for some who needs a hub to not pick this up.

(More customer reviews)This is a neat little router idealy for a small home network. It comes with four RJ45 10/100 ports on the front and a connection in the back for a DSL or cable modem. Two CAT-5 cables were included as well.
I have a networking background, but the quickstart guide has screen shots for Windows95/98 and easy to follow instructions. I was already using DHCP to connect to my cable modem, so I didn't need to change any settings to use this router. I literally plugged it in, restarted, and was up and running with one Windows 95 and one Windows 98 computer....
The advanced options can be setup via your web browser. It supports such options as NAT firewall protection (you can limit which ports are accessed), DMZ host (allows one computer to operate without the "protection" of the firewall), set the IP range and domain name for DHCP, and change access rights for different computers. It also has a "virtual server" which lets you rout services to different computers such as HTML to one, FTP to another, etc.

(More customer reviews)Unit is solid and sturdy and has a bit of a utilitarian look to it. The software that comes with it lets you manage multiples of these devices at a time at a layer 2 level, meaning even if you don't know what it's IP address it, it'll find it and you can set it.
I had never setup WPA enterprise before, so it took a little bit of googling and trial and error, but I did get this going.
Device seems "faster" than the Linksys WAP54G we have been using.
I will be getting additional units to replace all the SOHO Linksys & Dell APs we've got in our organization all currently running WEP...

The first unit lasted 3 weeks on a network of 4 users with a DSL rated @ 384 Kbps.
The tech service people refused to believe their unit could be at fault and blamed it on the ISP. I replaced this $450 router with a $50 one and all worked fine.
After a 2 hour wait for a Level 2 tech, I was issued a replacement unit. This unit, with serial # 4952, replaced one with a 125 serial # so I assumed the bug had been resolved. This unit died after 35 minutes of use.
I then called Netgear Tech Service people again and waited 2.5 hours for a Level 2 Technician. A recording came on telling me that they were too busy (after I waited for them for 2.5 hours) and told me to call at a later date and disconnected me.
I fired off a short letter to Netgear's Technical VP and CEO - which created a response. They offered to get me a new unit, stress test it, and send it to me. Then someone called and told me that it will take a week to get a suitable unit. I am still waiting - a week after the second unit died.
I had a very similar experience with their FVS 318 in Feb 2003 - where it took 3 units to get one that worked. I gave Netgear a second chance then. At this point however, I will no longer use Netgear equipment. I am an installer and I just cannot afford the labor associated with their faulty products.
As I told Netgear people - Stop rushing product to market before it is ready. The recall expense will hurt badly; the upset customers will go away. They did not heed my advice in Feburary and now, after I gave them an ample second chance, I do not intend to use Netgear routers again.
I strongly recommend you do the same unless you like to replace and replace and replace hoping to get something that works.
It is too bad for Netgear - but some people only learn the hard way. I guess they are one of them.
I wrote the above on Oct 10, 2003. It is now Feb. 22, 2004. Netgear does not have a fix as of today for this problem. They issued me a less costly FVS 318 as an interim fix in late October 2003 with the intent to have the FVL 328 repaired and restored. To date, there is no fix and this has been confirmed by an e mail to me of a few weeks ago.
I regret to take this harsh stance, I fully understand the technical problems in bringing a product to market and the unsuspected probems that can arise. However, the manufacturer is responsible for bringing a dependable product to market and this clearly did not happen in this case. For Netgear's sake, I hope they have overhauled their product introduction procedures or they will not survive with new product launch. For those considering a gateway router, I continue to recommend they not buy this one.

Airlink and Airlink101 are OEM producers and you'll find their components in many of the more expensive brands out there. I was surpised at both the features and performance.

Although I did have a little trouble configuring Internet Connection Sharing, the Tech Support at Linksys was able to get me up and running after less than 5 minutes on the phone.
I previously purchased the Linksys HomeLink Phoneline 10M Network Card Kit from .... I have a Windows 2000 system networked pier to pier with a Windows ME system. Although I was able to share files between both computers, I was not able to share my Broadband Cable Internet connection.
With the Linksys Phoneline Cable/DSL Router I am now able to share my Internet Connection between both computers and I don't have to leave a "host" computer constantly running, as you would if using Internet Connections Sharing via a proxy server software program(or Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing).
In conclusion, I would definitely recommend this product to anyone who is interested in sharing their Broadband Internet Connection between two, or more, computers. You won't have to pay for additional IP addresses, as most Cable providers suggest in order to share your connection. You will also benefit from the Router's built-in NAT Firewall.
