(More customer reviews)I bought this switch about 2 years ago and it has been froze up and rma'd twice.
The so-called webview management ony works on windows with IE, other browsers either fail completely or give partial unworking pages.
The command line options are very limited.
There is also some kind of issue(s) with connecting fast ethernet devices that cause connections to slow or stall. My network consists of this switch, linksys wrt-54 (now with dd-wrt), and some 5 port 10/100 linksys switch.
When the connection slows or stops, I have to reboot each of the devices just to get them to connect again.
Recommend avoid this product at all costs.

Cisco SR216 16-port 10/100 Rack Mountable Switch Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this switch to replace a very old 3Com Superstack II 10Mbit 24 port switch in my house. 16 ports is what I needed with a little room for expansion. Setup was a snap as it's not a managed switch. I hooked it into my WRT54GS, plugged everything in and it all worked. Given the bump from 10- to 100 Mbit, there is a noticeable increase in transfer speed across the network. I kept looking for a manual, but there isn't one (not that there needs to be one, quick setup is all you can do).
This comes with rack mounting hardware if you want to, but also sits nicely on a desk or shelf. FYI: this switch is silent (the old 3Com had a very loud fan), so I'm noticing other noises in my computer lab.
What else can I say? It is what it is and does what it's supposed to. And it's Cisco!
Notes (some may say cons): This is not a Gigabit switch and has nothing to do with wireless, but it's not supposed to.

I returned it to D-Link for a replacement, because they had NO RECORD of any customers having such a problem and NO IDEA what could cause it. When the replacement device arrived, I experienced the same problem--whenever I sent something to my network printer, the switch would reset, dropping all connections. I believe I've isolated this as a power spike issue. Each time I experienced this problem, it's because my laser printer is coming out of sleep mode. Note that my switch is NOT plugged into the same power strip as my printer. In fact, I have my switch plugged into a surge/UPS block. One other point worth noting that I think speaks poorly of D-Link. Though they sent me the replacement product, I was charged TWENTY-FIVE DOLLARS when I hadn't included the original "mounting kit" in the return package. The mounting kit consists of two screws and two plastic wall anchors. TWENTY-FIVE DOLLARS! Unbelievable.

It took me a long time to figure it out since my LAN is fairly complex and contains several switches. However, I had 3ea of the Linksys SR20xx 8-port models die on me much faster. Fortunately, those were much easier to find since they just died completely when they went. So, I am not going to purchase any more of the Linksys SR20xx products. I hope that others are more fortunate, but I have had too many of them fail and am now trying D-Link switches. I used to really like Linksys and their hardware used to work forever (or so it seemed).

Cisco SD2008 8-port 10/100/1000 Gigabit Switch Review

(More customer reviews)Signifiant changes have occurred over the life of this switch. Version 1 had an internal fan and was quite noisy, albeit cool running. Version 2 & 2.1 eliminated the fan. However capacitor C251, sitting next to an internal heatsink is prone to failure after 6 - 8 months, resulting in dropped packets and link connections. Version 3.0 has solved this problem with a complete re-layout of the printed circuit board (PCB), with a redesign of the power/voltage regulation. The new version, still fanless, runs MUCH cooler than version 2.1.

This hub has solid metal construction, sockets in the front, and lots of flickering lights that show the tranfer speed, and show who is connecting at either 10 or 100 Mbs. We use it to share one (adelphia 2-way cable) internet connection among 6 PCs, along with files and printing. No problems so far.
This hub handles the standard hub task with ease, and with a utilitarian aesthetic quality that you won't see in 3com's white plastic. 3Coms tries to disguise their hub as an external modem- why?
(p.s. I'm confused as to why 3Com's 8-port 10/100 hub costs over twice as much)

Netgear DS104 4-Port 10/100 Dual Speed Hub with Uplink Button Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this hub as part of a network starter kit (2 PCI ethernet cards + hub) and had no problems installing it. I run both Unix/Linux and Windoze machines and wanted all machines to be networked even with a mix of operating systems running at the same time -- and that meant simultaneous internet access, multi-player games, shared printers, etc. Basically, I wanted the network to do everything, so that any family member could sit down at a machine and do what they needed to do.
The DS-104 hub delivered from the time I installed it until the day I replaced it with a router (RT-314, also from Netgear). Installation was a snap, and as soon as I turned it on, I never had a moment's trouble from the DS-104.
So why did I switch? In two words, performance and price. Although the DS-104 is a fine product, its multiuser performance simply can't compare to a switch (which was built-in to the RT-314 router I replaced it with). I noticed that performance suffered when all of us wanted to use the computers simultaneously, which got me thinking about alternatives to improve performance. I initially intended to replace the DS-104 with a switch. After checking prices, I realized that I could actually purchase a router (switch + hardware firewall) for less than the cost of a switch alone. I eventually went that route, after receiving outstanding service from the DS-104 hub.
So was this purchase a throw-away? Hardly. The DS-104 did what it promised to do, reliably and without fuss. It handles both 10 and 100 Mbps connections transparently, so you don't even need to know the speed of whatever you're connecting. It's well-constructed (metal case instead of plastic) and absolutely reliable. Although I've replaced the DS-104 with a router, I haven't gotten rid of it -- I'm saving it for the day when I need to add several machines to the network and I'm out of ports on my router.
The DS-104 is solid, dependable networking at a very reasonable price. Recommended.

Cisco SD208 8-port 10/100 Switch Review

D-Link DGS-1005D 5-Port 10/100/1000 Gigabit Switch, Desktop Review

(More customer reviews)I had been using the older 10/100 D-Link switch (DSS-5+) for over two years and never had any kind of problem. About three weeks ago, I wrote a review of that switch here and mentioned that I'd like to try the Gigabit version (this one). After thinking about it for a bit, and realizing how inexpensive these things are, I went out and bought it. Exactly as I said for the DSS-5+, this is a great little switch that's definitely worth the money. All the ports are in the back, the casing has a brushed aluminum look, and it's fanless. So, it's definitely possible to leave it sitting on the desk. Since the "switching fabric" supports 10Gb/sec, that means each of the five ports can carry their full 2Gb/sec (1Gb/sec each way) capacity without problem. The darn thing doesn't even get warm. Definitely a good buy (I rate it at 5 stars out of 5).
Darn near every computer sold these days has a Gigabit Ethernet connection built into it. So, assuming you have the proper cabling (Cat 5e or Cat 6), using a Gigabit switch should let you take advantage of the added speed on your local network. However, it won't make any difference across the Internet since only a rare few cable modem even connect at 100Mb/sec and, as far as I know, none connect at 1 GB/sec.

Netgear GS716TNA Giga Smart Switch 16Pt Review

(More customer reviews)Ok, so it lets electrons flow in the expected way. It does work as a 10/100/1000 switch. BUT, when something is billed as a "Smart Switch", I expect it to be - get this - smart. Simply throwing a web ui on it doesn't make it smart.
Let's make a list of the things this switch doesn't support.
1. 802.3ad link aggregation. The specs on Netgear's site claim 802.3ad support, but it's just not there. The $130 GS108T even does proper 802.3ad.
2. Network Time - Again, the much cheaper GS108T does NTP.
3. Syslog support - A so-called "smart switch" should generate log entries for various events, right? Right? Nope. Doesn't do it.
4. Be quiet - This switch is billed as usable in a rack mounted environment or as a "desktop switch". Great, if your desktop is in the middle of a noisy warehouse. Not so great if your desktop is in an otherwise quiet room. I blame the crappy 2x 40mm fans that operate full time when the switch is turned on.
I can live without logging or ntp support, but I need link aggregation. Since the cheaper GS108T, from the same family of products, supports this feature, and the Netgear site claims the GS716T supports it, you'd like to think it would, right? Eek. It's sitting on my front step right now waiting for UPS to take this abomination back to Amazon.

Transfering HD videos from my office to the file server became a pain at 100Base-TX.
When I saw this switch in the 8 port configuration, I jumped on it for the price.
I wasn't even sure how well it would work on my CAT-5 wiring.
Bingo! It all came up gigabit on the PCs that had 1000Base-TX NICs running. Tt's really fast.
My transfer times are great and I can edit large files right off the server without doing a copy over first. I also bought the TP-Link 100Base-TX PCI cards for the PCs that were not gigabit. No problems with Vista or XP using these cards.

It transfeered a GB to two systems using Gigabit networking in less than 2 minutes! It is very light and sturdy even though you might think it will break if you drop it. Every port works and the crossover port worked as well.
Recommend every small business buy it especially if they are in the technology industry.

I've used them all and the major complaint I have with most home switches is the HEAT they generate. You can put money down that Your Cisco Linksys or DLINK switch is going to last about a year. They do give you a warranty and an easy replacement but I would rather buy a switch that I didnt need to exorcise the return policy every 1-2 years thank you very much.
The ProCurve Switches use external brick type power supplies that keep the heat away from your switch processor. This May be an issue for Business applications that use rack mounting, but for home use ProCurve hits a Home Run!

(More customer reviews)I found this product while looking for a way to split the LAN at my job into two. We get one ethernet cord running to our desk and that's it. I was worried that my company would have some kind of block to not allow this to happen (they don't allow streaming video, audio, etc... so they block a lot of things). I found the unit on sell (about half price) and decided it was worth the price to try it. I tried it at home at first and it worked great (I have a router at home, so don't really need this at home, but just wanted to make sure it worked at home so if it didn't at the office, then I'd know it wasn't the device). I unplugged the ethernet from one computer, plugged this in and plugged in two computers. So, basically, there was one ethernet cord going from the router to the TRENDnet box and two computers branched off from there. Worked great - no set up needed, just plug-n-play. So, now for the big test: I took it to work. Worked with no big problems - same plug-n-play. The only thing is that when I plug my computer directly to the work LAN, it says the connection at 1 GBPS, but through this device, it shows up as 100 MBPS. I can't really tell any problems so far with speed - everything is working as normal, but now I have online access on both my work computer and my laptop. So, for me, this device works as advertised and meets my needs.
PS - sorry for my non-technical review, but I'm no tech expert!
PPS - don't forget you'll need an additional ethernet cord to make this connection. I didn't think of it at first, but luckily remembered before I finished my transaction and was able to pick up a cheap 3-footer.
