Airlink AWLL6070 Wireless 802.11n USB Adapter Review

Airlink AWLL6070 Wireless 802.11n USB Adapter

I bought this because I read that it works well with Linux. It worked exactly as expected although you do need enough tech savvy to download, compile, and install a driver (the open-source RT2870 driver from the Ralink website is the right one). It connected to my Linksys 802.11n router at full speed and very stable. Considering that other manufacturers charge 2-3 times as much for the same thing, and don't have good Linux support, this is a steal.

I purchased this product solely because of its compatibility with Mac OS X, as my internal wireless card is "unpredictable" at best. However, I couldn't figure out which driver to use to install the Panda USB because the Mini CD that ships with the package is not readable by the internal CD/DVD drive found in my MacBookPro -- the drive doesn't have a retractable tray to which the mini disk can be coupled. Thus began my aggravations with the purchase of this adapter. The website for this product at [...] has the drivers for Mac, Linux, and Windows but no instructions to follow for installation. That's helpful. I was glad to download the driver over a 15k link if I could only tell what driver number applies to my wireless device. There is not a mention of the manufacturers model number anywhere on the adapter, on the packaging, or in the brief brochure that is included in the retail box. Once I am able to figure out that this card is RT3070 and download the software, the device remains unusable. The Ralink wireless manager software reports that the card is connected to my network, yet my ISR/access point does not show an association, and consequently an IP address isn't assigned to the device. However, there is no convincing the proprietary wi-fi manager that the adapter isn't actually associated. Lovely. Thinking that I may be able to use it on the Linux OS that dual boots on my laptop, I load up Fedora 11 and download the Linux driver from the RaLink website. Too bad that I cannot figure out how to get the installation going now that I have the driver. I don't know if it is not compatible with my distro or what. And where are the customers supposed to get the supposed one year technical support? The link from the manufacturers website immediately prompts the end user for username and password credentials without providing a link for one to use to create an account. I give up -- its a loss and a total waste of money. Had I known about the shoddy support and lack of documentation I would not have taken a chance on this product, let alone its inability to function in the Mac OS X environment. Caveat Emptor.

i bought this to use in my newly upgraded desktop with windows vista. it CONTINUALLY drops the wireless signal (at least every hour) - when you click to connect to a network it does not find any networks. pulling it out and pushing it back in seems to recover the network almost every time, but this is really annoying to have to do repeatedly. it is not a signal strength issue in general, as another desktop in the same room and two laptops that frequent the room have no trouble getting good signals.

I received my adapter before the wireless router (also EnGenius) and setup an ad hoc connection. Windows 7 found the adapter right after I connected it to a usb port. It is a small but stylish adapter. I like everything about it. After that it was just a matter of using Windows 7 Network and Sharing Center to setup the connection.
Of course, once the router arrived, it was a snap to setup the network, since Windows 7 had no problems finding the adapter and router. To setup a network using a router, plug in the wireless adapter and then follow the instructions for setting up the router. Easy installation and use, and low price makes each EnGenius product an excellent value.

This thing has NO range...It could be 2ft from a router and still register weak signals. Also DON'T even try to use the driver disc it comes with...not readable on one computers' drive and readable but has too many errors from another. I had to go to their website and dl the driver install setup program....and that didn't work...I THEN had to install the driver update. Drivers seem to work fine. The interface GUI is CRAP as well.

This review is written for non-technical people about improving the speed of their wireless access or getting on a laptop that does not have the capacity built in - For very little money!
More and more people own laptop/notbook or the newer and even smaller "netbooks." The idea is pretty straight forward. A computer that is portable and can easily be taken from place to place, unlike our traditional desktop-type computers that are secured by both the sheer mass as well as by the multitude of wired connections they usually require to one place.
The evolution of portable technology led to what we call, descriptively, "wireless" connections. There are connections to wireless system that do not require wired connections. What they DO require is a wireless adapter, often built into to newer notebook and netbook units.
There are a couple of possible complications. One is having access from a portable computer that does not have a built-in wireless card and the other is having one, but wanting greater speed than the now older versions of wireless adapters allow. An inexpensive and entirely satisfactory solution to either issue is the Netgear WN111 v.2, available for about $80. new and for about $20. refurbished. I bought one of the latter and am please to say that it works perfectly.
There are, essentially, four generations of wireless connections. They go by the shorthand designations of a,b,g and draft-n. "a" is the first and slowest and they increase in both speed and range up to the latest draft-n adapters and routers. Of course, for any wireless card or adapter to function, it must be within range and have access to a wireless router. These are ubiquitous at internet `hot spots' and are frequently becoming the connections of choice in peoples' homes.
When I first wanted to increase the wireless download speed of my own notebook (two years old and with a built-in a/b/g wireless card, I mistakenly thought that I would only need to replace that card with one that would receive the faster, `draft-n' signal. Wrong! Turns our that these small wireless cards are often necessarily compliant with the motherboards (the computer heart and brain of your machine) and the card cannot be replaced with a `draft-n' card because it will not work with the motherboard.
I actually thought about replacing the notebook computer - though in all other respects, it performed perfectly. Then I discovered the magic of wireless adapters, including those that received the speedier `draft-n' signals and connected to the outside of a laptop by simply 1) downloading the software from the company's website if a disc did not come with I and then 1) plugging it into an available USB (v2) port. After trying several and doing a good deal of research, I settled on the Netgear NN111 v.2 wireless USB adapter. It works perfectly.
There are other reasons you might want to consider getting one.
If you have upgraded your wireless router at home from the now standard `g' or `a/b/g,' to one that spreads the coverage and increases the signal strength and downloading speed, you will find that if ANY device operating at less than the `draft-n' speed is connected to your network, the entire network will revert to the slower `g' configuration. For the `n' to work, every item connected to that network must be able to use the signal at that level or the whole shebang reverts (`downscales') to the lowest common denominator.

Hawking HWUG1 Wireless G USB Network Adapter with External SMA Jack Review

Hawking HWUG1 Wireless G USB Network Adapter with External SMA Jack
Average Reviews:

This adapter works with Mac OS X, version 10.4, with a driver available from Ralink Technologies. I have tried this on both a Power PC (Powerbook G4) and an Intel machine (Imac). It worked on both.
To get the driver, go to ralinktech DOT com, navigate to support, then to Macintosh, and download the driver labelled RT2571...USB. Install the driver package, restart your machine, and then insert the adapter in a USB port. A "USB wireless utility" will then start. There is no documentation, but the utility is more or less self-explanatory. If you also have a built in airport card, it probably makes sense to turn off airport before using the adapter, just to be safe.
Out of the box, the sensitivity of this adapter seems to be at least as good as that of the built in airport card in my Powerbook. The adapter allows use of an external antenna. I expect that in situations where the built in airport cannot get an adequate signal, this adapter with an additional antenna could do better.

Hawking Wireless G USB Network Adapter with external SMA jack, Apple Compatible - HWUG1A Review

Hawking Wireless G USB Network Adapter with external SMA jack, Apple Compatible - HWUG1A
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been waiting a couple years now for a wireless manufacture to "get it" and realize there is a market for a USB wi-fi dongle with a detachable antenna. For all the PC Card versions out there with detachable antenna, it's taken forever for someone to come out with a USB equivalent. Finally, Hawking has, with the HWUG1.
The version I purchased is the Macintosh version (HWUG1A). This comes with a driver from a chip maker called Ralink. Ralink has been doing a public beta with this driver for a few years now, and I was already familiar with it. It's in pretty solid shape now. I guess you could say it's ready for prime time. And now that Ralink are actually getting money for it directly from OEMs like Hawking, MacSense and a couple of others, the driver is likely to be maintained and kept in good condition through OS X upgrades. This is an important consideration because, unlike some other nework interfaces, a wi-fi dongle requires a driver apart from anything that comes with the standard Mac OS X install.
The screw on antenna uses the popular and common SMA connector. Hawking sells several omni-directional and directional antennas that are compatible. I have also attached it to a Cantenna which works very well. But lately my favorite solution is to add a Tritium Flatenna reflector. I like the Flatenna because it packs so flat and slips right into my laptop case with my papers. Ironically, the Flatenna doesn't require a detachable antenna. But I still regard this feature as important.
Overall I'm very pleased with my purchase. I wish it had cost a bit less. I have been able to purchase D-Link wi-fi USB dongles, that I was previously using with the Ralink beta driver, for as little as $20. I paid over $50 for the Hawking. Also, the D-Link comes with a nice, weighted USB stand and extension cable. The Hawking does not. But with the included, foldable antenna, there is less need of a remote stand base.

Product works well. Shipped to me with v1.0 of the software -- had to get v1.1 from the website. Also, it's a little large, so it will block things that are very close (e.g. another USB port on top of or right next to it). Trendnet includes a small (about 2") USB extension cable to resolve the problem, though that's a little awkward. On the other hand, probably all wireless N usb adapters will have the same problem, because of the extra antenna & circuitry. Range and throughput are excellent, and it doesn't keep dropping connection like some adapters do.
*edit*
FWIW, I've verified that this is compatible with not only Trendnet Wireless N routers, but also Linksys WRT600 and dlink dir-655

But from my POV this is a safe buy. No problems so far.
