Airlink AWLL6070 Wireless 802.11n USB Adapter Review

Airlink AWLL6070 Wireless 802.11n USB Adapter
Average Reviews:

I bought this because I read that it works well with Linux. It worked exactly as expected although you do need enough tech savvy to download, compile, and install a driver (the open-source RT2870 driver from the Ralink website is the right one). It connected to my Linksys 802.11n router at full speed and very stable. Considering that other manufacturers charge 2-3 times as much for the same thing, and don't have good Linux support, this is a steal.

It appears that the Netgear MA401 802.11b Wireless PC Card will not work with this network adapter.
Belkin's site claims:

A: No, the Wireless PCI Card Adapter F5D6000 will only work with and was only designed to work with the Wireless Notebook Network Card F5D6020. Using other PCMCIA or CardBus adapter cards will not work.

The DWL-AB520 enables IT managers to plan for future network growth or to immediately expand their wireless network infrastructure when available wireless channels have already been tapped out. The additional high-bandwidth channels available with 802.11a also offer users on the network a robust way to transmit large data files much quicker than what was possible with 802.11b. Network administrators have the option of overlaying an 802.11a network on top of an existing 802.11b network, essentially creating another wireless network of 802.11a users who can communicate discreetly with one another. The DWL-AB520 is IEEE 802.11a- and 802.11b-compliant and interoperable with other 802.11a- and 802.11b-compliant devices.Unlike previous wireless PCI adapters, the DWL-AB520 features a high-gain external antenna that can be positioned in any number of configurations to achieve the best possible signal. When communicating in the 802.11a bandwidth, the D-Link DWL-AB520 also provides a level of security not previously achievable from other standard wireless solutions. The Atheros 802.11a chipset's utilization of the latest data encryption standard, AES along with 802.1x for user authentication provides a much more formidable barrier to hackers and sniffers, allowing users to share confidential or time-sensitive data with a much greater sense of security. The DWL-AB520 also provides the option to utilize 152-bit WEP with dynamic keying along with 802.1x user authentication to secure 802.11a transmissions. When used with D-Link's other 802.11a and multimode access points and routers, the DWL-AB520 offers a quick, out-of-box solution to instantly expand a company's network.

Sonnett Technologies G54-PCI Aria Extreme Wireless PCI Card (54 Mbps) Review

Sonnett Technologies G54-PCI Aria Extreme Wireless PCI Card (54 Mbps)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So you want wireless Internet for your home? This is what you need. This card, a wireless router and either a subscribed DSL or cable connection (modem usually provided by your Internet company).
Unless you want to connect solely to your PDA and cellphone, don't get a bluetooth adapter (I was hoping that would be the cheap alternative to get me hooked up, but it's not). You have to have the two pieces of hardware to make it work -- the pci card and the router.
I've been a PC girl all my life, but recently bought an Ibook. I also bought an airport express base station with itunes so that I could have my Ibook online at the same time as my PC, but you could buy any wireless router. However, the aiport base is so easy to use, I highly recommend getting one, takes the headache out of configuring your wireless and allows you to play your stereo in any room of your home (a neat perk). You basically just attach your Internet ethernet cable into it, then plug it into any wall socket and it's set. Even though it's an apple router, it works just as easily with a PC. It's brilliant.
I did a lot of reading to try to figure out a compatible format that would allow both my PC and Ibook to get online and found this. The other reviews are right, this is the easiest set up of wireless imaginable. And the beauty of it is that it works just as efficiently on a PC (I own a Dell Dimension) as it does on a Mac.
Before you install this card though, be sure to drop by http://www.sonnettech.com/ downloads and get the Aria extreme PCI Windows Utility & Driver -- just have it unzipped in a new file folder on your desktop, ready for installation. For some reason the company doesn't ship a CD, and while Windows XP is automated for almost every product out there, for this one, you need to do a bit of legwork by getting the download at the website. So you'll have to be attached to your Internet before you install this card to get the download first.
Next, open your PC, install the card in any open PCI slot, close the computer back up, attach the attena, tilt it vertically up, and then reboot your computer. XP will give you a prompt to install ... just ignore this and close out. Once you're booted up, double click the "setup" file from the aria download and it will install everything for you.
Unhook your Internet cable (you only need to unplug the part that would go into your PC normally), plug it into your wireless router and within minutes it will detect your signal. All set up for your PC. If you are encountering trouble with the signal .. go down to your taskbar.. you'll see a green icon next to your clock, bottom right, double click on it and go into the configuration tab. Mid-way down you'll see something that says Network name, with a pulldown menu. For me, because I'm using an apple router, I chose "apple network" and immediately got "excellent" connection. Experiment with the choices and pick the signal that gives you "excellent."
Now this may sound more complicated than it is. I wrote out the step by step instructions in case you ran into problems, but if your installation was anything like mine, it'll take you about 10 minutes at most to get back online and WIRELESS!
As for the card itself, the speed is stunning. I am impressed that the Internet can go much faster than I already had with a straight cable modem connection.
All in all, this is an excellent solution to going wireless. I highly recommend it, and the airport base, to get you wireless-ed in your home.

When I got a computer for my bedroom, I realized that it would be extremely inconvinent to run an ethernet cable from the router to there so I googled around and bought this on newegg. This was the first wifi adapter I ever had and it worked great for a month. Then it started randomly working off and on, and somehow the case fell off of it. A week after the case fell off of it, the usb plug and the device itself broke apart(I accidently touched it and got quite the shock). For the time it did work, it worked fine. After this I bought a $5 one on ebay, its case fell off too. I'm now going to spend the money to buy a nice one, but for those going the cheap route don't get this one.

I couldn't get this Alfa aapter to work with my XP computer. It wouldn't connect to my Netgear wireless router or any other wireless router in the area. It kept displaying the error message "wireless LAN card not exist". But since this is a wireless adapter no LAN card should be needed. Also, the router signals it displayed as being available were no more than my regular adapter on my other PC gets, so this product didn't seem to offer any long range advantage as claimed. The seller, DBRoth, gave me a full refund so I will give them a good rating, but the Alfa adapter seemed useless to me.

I'd like to contribute a positive review here, since the previous reviewers seemed to have problems with this card. I bought this card to go with my D-Link Wireless Router, and everything has worked fine since I bought this. I haven't had one issue since I've installed this card.
My signal strength has always been above 75%, but I don't expect it to change much since it is installed in a desktop PC. I am running Windows 2000 and I don't notice much of a difference if at all in my internet access speeds.
I used to have a wired network but wanted to expand to more than 2 computers and my hub was old and slow. So with this wireless upgrade to my network I was able to install everything in about 1 hour. I bought the D-Link router with 4 wired ports still use one wired PC connection, and another PC has this PCI card in it, my laptop has the PCMCIA version and they all network together quite nicely. I was impressed with the short time it took me to implement this change.
Thats my experience with D-Link and their wireless networking products. I hope your experience is as easy as mine.

When you're connected to other D-Link AirPlus products, the performance is even greater--up to 22 Mbps.
D-Link's PCI adapter also features 256-bit WEP encryption that gives you a higher level of security for your data and communication, and a configuration utility that can quickly and automatically discover available wireless networks and create and save detailed connectivity profiles for those networks accessed most often.
The DWL-520+ is a powerful 32-bit PCI adapter that installs quickly and easily on desktop PCs, and, when used with other D-Link AirPlus products, automatically connects to the network. And all D-Link wireless adapters can be used in ad hoc mode to connect directly with other cards, or in infrastructure mode to connect with a wireless access point for access to the Internet in your office or home network.

I've used a D-link directional antenna for a couple of years, for which I paid $16. Recently, I needed a second antenna and bought this one which is cheaper, and claims a slightly better gain (+10dB). I found that:
- the reception was not as good as the D-link
- the cable is shorter
- no adapter is included for TNC connector
Clearly, it was a poor choice, trying to save a few bucks.

PROS : It doesn't hurt small furry animals.CONS: It wont do 802.11n , the software sucks, doesn't show up in the airport icon , needs pci software even to wo9rk in G mode which is the only mode it will work in. It can't find the 2.4ghz N network or the 5 ghz N , the support staff arrogant and abusive. Dont even bother writing them it's a waste of time.
With my old Aria Extreme G card it worked terrifically, it showed up in the airport icon and ran teriific, unfortunately this is a 180% Not only the Aria Extreme N hard to connect, it does not show up in the airport icon, it has to use a PCI Card Utility to find the network and speeds average no better than a $14 G card . When my 802.11n Airport Extreme base is set on any single N channel it can't find the base at all so I wrote Sonnet and this is what came back.
We would be more than happy to advise you if you could be so kind as to write us a civil note.
Sincerely,
Robert
Sonnet Tech Support Manager
For those in wonder my note said "Help , it's not working " ! Nothing like hiring crazy people with emotional issues to take out on customers . How much more lucky can I be today now I've got this fake Sonnet N card ? I have to deal with a nut job Sheesh ! . Don't buy this card folks , the hassle in dealing isn't worth the baby sitting fee. Update: After a bunch of sleuthing I discovered the reason that the card is not recognized in Tiger, there is no support for N , not till the OSX 10.5.7 . If you run OSX Tiger forget it. Oh, and if you have other computers on your network you will lose access. Not worth it at all.

Initially I've decided to install only the driver and not the software. It worked right away on Windows XP SP2 and found many different networks. The average
signal strength is at least 2 bars more than on my internal laptop antenna. And surfing speeds are really good, I suppose also because of the higher transmitting power.
Later, I've installed the driver on a new laptop that already had an internal wifi antenna running on Intel Proset wireless software. However using this software I could not select the external antenna.
Therefore I had to install the software supplied with the adapter, which is recommended by Engenius anyway.
The way I use it now is: both the original Intel and the Engenius software are running.
First, I scan with the internal laptop antenna if I can connect to a network. If this does not work, I connect the external Engenius antenna via a 2 meter usb extension cable, so that I can hang the adapter in the window and run the Engenius software to find a network.
So, If you are using the Windows feature to connect to wifi, you can select more than one adapter, if you are using any other software, such as Intel Proset, you are better of installing the Engenius software to run alongside it.
Bottom line: his adapter will give you the opportunity to be online in more different locations.

I bought this card a few months ago when there was a rebate going on. I installed it in Linux Mint and it was detected, automatically installed the driver and just needed to configure the SSID and password and in less than 5 minutes I got internet connection. I then also installed it on a Windows 7, but got the BSOD with the latest driver from ABIT's website. Then I googled around and found this fix
"Very simple, this card is actually an atheros chipset card, simply uninstall any abit driver and install the driver for the card manually using Windows 7 default drivers under 'Network Adapters', pick either Atheros AR5006X or AR5006XS." And now it also works in Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.

Average Reviews:

Note for operating this device under Windows XP Service Pack 2:
Out-of-the-box, this USB device does not play well with other USB devices. Attempting to do an automatic installation of the drivers (having Windows find the drivers on the CD) consistently yields a Windows STOP error, AKA the Blue Screen of Death. So, I was forced to install the companion software from CD. During the installation, the software told me to update to Windows XP Service Pack 1 with a hotfix I already had installed, to correct known USB conflicts. The device would thereafter only connect to a wireless network if it was plugged in at boot-time, and once disconnected, would not reconnect without a reboot. I still had to get updated drivers for the DWL-G132 from Windows Update and install them; now the conflicts seem but a distant memory.
With the correct drivers, this card has actually started working well in a USB 2.0 port. It is notable to mention that when connected to a USB 1.1 port, the device's performance suffers significantly. Otherwise, it connects reliably to wireless networks anywhere I go and rarely drops signals. It is also very easy to disconnect, reconnect, and swap between laptops and desktop computers. My first reaction when opening the box was that it was too big and would physically take up too much space when plugged in near other USB ports, but it comes with a VERY convenient extended USB cradle. The cradle, of course, allows you to connect the DWL-G132 on the desk, but works with other USB devices just as well, such as memory readers readers, flash memory drives, and even my webcam. That itself is probably the most convenient little gadget I've gotten in a while. If you know the process and can get this card installed properly, it will do very well for you. I'm sure that new revisions will be released containing working drivers in the box, and Windows driver packs will probably include them eventually at install time, but without knowing ahead of time the process was painful.
Also, keep in mind: this is a USB card, it is for portable use. If you try to consistently maximize the throughput, depending on the conditions, it may overheat. If you need to statically connect it to a single machine, get the PCI equivalent.

However, I couldn't figure out which driver to use to install the Panda USB because the Mini CD that ships with the package is not readable by the internal CD/DVD drive found in my MacBookPro -- the drive doesn't have a retractable tray to which the mini disk can be coupled. Thus began my aggravations with the purchase of this adapter. The website for this product at [...] has the drivers for Mac, Linux, and Windows but no instructions to follow for installation. That's helpful. I was glad to download the driver over a 15k link if I could only tell what driver number applies to my wireless device. There is not a mention of the manufacturers model number anywhere on the adapter, on the packaging, or in the brief brochure that is included in the retail box. Once I am able to figure out that this card is RT3070 and download the software, the device remains unusable. The Ralink wireless manager software reports that the card is connected to my network, yet my ISR/access point does not show an association, and consequently an IP address isn't assigned to the device. However, there is no convincing the proprietary wi-fi manager that the adapter isn't actually associated. Lovely. Thinking that I may be able to use it on the Linux OS that dual boots on my laptop, I load up Fedora 11 and download the Linux driver from the RaLink website. Too bad that I cannot figure out how to get the installation going now that I have the driver. I don't know if it is not compatible with my distro or what. And where are the customers supposed to get the supposed one year technical support? The link from the manufacturers website immediately prompts the end user for username and password credentials without providing a link for one to use to create an account. I give up -- its a loss and a total waste of money. Had I known about the shoddy support and lack of documentation I would not have taken a chance on this product, let alone its inability to function in the Mac OS X environment. Caveat Emptor.
