Cisco SA540 Security Appliance Review

Cisco SA540 Security Appliance

Had these in two offices (West Coast/NYC) for a little over a week. The firmware is highly unstable, even after being upgraded to the latest version from Cisco. These were installed by a highly-rated Cisco partner firm for our offices, and after trying to get the most basic features to stick we've all simply given up. The VPN is extremely slow and volatile, settings do not stick in the firmware ("Hey, didn't I just make that a UDP port forward? Why does it default to TCP when the setting is applied and saved?"), DNS errors (that Cisco acknowledged and "fixed") caused unpredictable browsing and Web services for users, there's no command-line interface only GUI, and port forwarding simply does not (even when Cisco support tried to fix it). Terrible routers that it turns out are re-branded Linksys (remember, Cisco bought Linksys not too long ago). Save yourself a headache and start with a 5505 if you're looking at this price point.

I installed Norton Internet Security and within no time realised my machine was under continual attack, with warnings flashing up everywhere! But with holes and patches being issued regularly I decided that it would be pure folly to only rely on a software solution to protect my sensitive data. I finally found what I needed, AlphaShield. I plugged it in and calm descended - all warnings stopped immediately, my internet surfing is totally unaffected and no more alarms!
So if you are looking for a simple, plug and play solution that provides total protection, this is it. Just plug it an and go! Technical info was lacking on Amazon, but there is plenty from Alphashield Inc www.alphashield.com or, a more informative site i found at Northbridge Systems. www.northbridgesystems.com
This is essential kit for the broadband user who, like me hasnt a clue about computers and just wants a simple solution that does it all automatically.

I bought this SRX5308 to replace an old FVX538 v1 router, and after a couple months I can say that I am pleased with the stability of this device. The SRX5308 can handle loads more simultaneous connections (200K+), and that connection limitation was causing hanging on the FVX538 as the device is used as a firewall & NAT router for a dozen servers in a datacenter. The SRX5308 has not needed a reboot once in 2 months, which says much since I have gone through 2 Linksys (RV042, RV082) and one other Netgear (FVX538) router previously as those were hanging every other day or more often.
The web-based management interface works well and I am mainly using the firewall services and NAT functionality, so I can't comment on the VPN or load balancing functionality.
I would just give 4 stars, but when I contacted Netgear for support (apparently there is 90 days free support) they were very responsive and promised a fix for my needs (more WAN secondary IPs supported) in the next firmware update. The hardware has lifetime warranty, and I have no doubt Netgear will honor this as they have promptly replaced other units that I have sent in.

This TZ-190 Enhanced router is the real deal and this purchase was quite a DEAL! Don't try to figure out how to configure it yourself. Unless you have a least a year of classes in network protocols and network security. The manual is hundreds of pages long. SonicWall's Tech Support is generally very good, especially when you get a Tech who really knows their stuff. They even taught me along the way so that I could fill in gaps in my networking knowledge. We now have three-way VPN tunnels between our 3 geographical locations. We have ports configured for DMZ access to VoIP phone server working with local and remote access VoIP phones. We have load balancing between a T1 line and cable connection. And if those lines go down the (user supplied) PCMCIA broadband card can route internet traffic through the Wide Area Broadband network. We're only utilizes about 15%-20% of the things this firewall can do! A great value with excellent tech support.

ZyXEL ZyWALL 5 Internet Security Firewall Appliance With 4 10/100 Fast Ethernet Ports and 10 IPSec VPN Tunnels Review

ZyXEL ZyWALL 5 Internet Security Firewall Appliance With 4 10/100 Fast Ethernet Ports and 10 IPSec VPN Tunnels
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased a Zywall 5 VPN server to replace an older Linux Freeswan solution. It took about a month to set up in my corporate environment, which likely differs greatly from the Zywall's intended configuration.
The Zywall 5 assumes that it is the default gateway to the Internet, and thus lacks the capability of answering ARP requests for its connected VPN clients (which are configured with virtual IP addresses in the same subnet as the LAN). The Linux Freeswan solution could be configured to answer ARP requests for connected VPN clients. Working around this problem required adding an additional network card to the internal LAN firewall, attaching the Zywall to that LAN card, and configuring the internal firewall to forward packets destined to the connected VPN clients directly to the Zywall. This was not as clean as the Linux Freeswan solution, but it worked.
The Zywall 5 supports X.509 VPN certificates, but requires that a certificate authority be set up on a Windows 2000 server to generate the appropriate certificates for the Zywall and VPN clients. This is a bit awkward to accomplish, considering that the same was possible with just a couple command line entries on the Linux Freeswan box.
It is easy to accidentally misconfigure the Zywall, such that the web and telnet interfaces are no longer accessible, requiring a connection with a serial cable to undo the settings. This happened more than once when trying to make the Zywall send packets back to attached VPN clients.
While the Zywall supports up to 10 simultaneous clients, there are severe limitations. Preshared keys cannot be used with road warrior connections (where the client's IP address changes with each connection). X.509 certificates can be used with road warrior connections, but the same client X.509 certificate must be used for all road warriors (this makes it hard to revoke a certificate should a laptop be stolen). The Zywall supports RADIUS authentication in addition to certificates, so that somewhat resolves the need to share certificates. Multiple road warriors can simultaneous connect using the same VPN rule configured in the Zywall.
The Zywall at my site sits behind an external routing firewall. Some of the Zywall's NAT features appear to be buggy in this configuration, directing return VPN packets at the external routing firewall, rather than to the connected VPN client's IP address.
Bandwidth limitation capabilities help prevent attached VPN clients on high speed cable or DSL connections from completely saturating the corporate Internet connection.
Based on my experience with configuring Linux IPTABLES firewalls on the Freeswan box, the firewall on the Zywall is a challenge to set up correctly. Instead of referring to the encrypted network interface connection as IPSEC0 as on the Freeswan box, the Zywall uses verbose descriptions such as (LAN to LAN / Zywall), (LAN to WAN), (LAN to DMZ), (WAN to LAN), (WAN to WAN / Zywall), (WAN to DMZ), (DMZ to LAN), (DMZ to WAN), and (DMZ to DMZ / Zywall) - determining which setting to use in order to restrict traffic between the corporate LAN and a connected VPN client based on the documentation is difficult (even though the manual is 500+ pages). I had to disable the Zywall's firewall to resolve connectivity issues, and rely on the internal firewall to control traffic destined to connected VPN clients. Maybe if one of the verbose descriptions were labeled (LAN to VPN Client) it would be easier to set up the firewall.
The Zywall 5 supports time synchronization to Internet time servers, which is a required feature to keep the time from rapidly drifting from the correct time. Time synchronization is not always successful, nor does it always use the specified time server.
Once the device's limitations are determined, and it is set up to work around those limitations, the Zywall 5 performs very well for its intended purpose with clients using Safenet SoftRemote VPN software.

Safe At Office 500 Internet Security Appliance 5U Review

I recently bought a Safe@Office 500 for our small office. The appliance itself is very nice, throughput is decent. The issue pops up when you subscribe to antivirus and support. The division of checkpoint that handles this is Safaware. Their website is currently broken so you can't register (11/4/06). This of course does not stop them from getting you to buy subscriptions through the appliance... unfortunately you can't use them. There is chat help on the sofaware website but you can't use it if you are not signed in which of course you can't do. No support numbers are listed in any of the documentation. It took three calls to Checkpoint to get a number. The tech answered "hello"... no company name. I could barely hear him... he blamed it on a VOIP connection to India.
Most of what we were able to figure out we did on our own, a waste of two business days. We still cannot figure out how to subscribe to or use the antispam features. Getting the right ports open for Quickbooks was not easy. The wireless and wired are on a different range of IP addresses, so you will not see any peer to peer networking without mapping the directories.
Great little appliance, terrible support.

NETGEAR FVS124G ProSafe Gigabit VPN Firewall 25 Review

NETGEAR FVS124G ProSafe Gigabit VPN Firewall 25
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I decided to try purchasing this product even with all the negative reviews (since they were a little old) and needless to say the reviews have made me quite cautious about looking for performance and connectivity problems, but so far, other than initial setup problems it's been working well (only going on two days).
My first impression is that the device is pretty well-built (heavy) however it does get a little hot... I'm using the router with an Adelphia cable modem on WAN port 1 and BellSouth DSL on WAN port 2. The product mostly works right out of the box although you'll have to find where to set the password and change it from the defaults (I don't know why router manufacturers don't make this the first thing you have to do).
I attached my cable modem and was able to successfully connect through the router. I then attached my DSL modem and changed the internal WAN MODE setting to "Load Balance". Everything seemed to work well except WAN 2 kept being reported as DOWN... very frustrated and nervous about the reviews that I had seen I decided to call Netgear tech support... after registering the product I was quickly connected to a technician who walked me through the proper setup... turns out that I needed to change the default IP address of the router as it was conflicting with the DSL modem... I also ended up changing the IP address on my wireless router and disabling DHCP (on the wireless)...
So far so good...
I downloaded a torrent of CentOS4DVD to test the performance and sure enough I was able to realize the combined download bandwidth of both broadband connections... I also checked my remote web server access logs and saw requests for a page coming from both my Adelphia and BellSouth IP addresses... so I know load balancing is working properly... I attempted some SSL transactions and they seemed to work ok... I'm still not 100% certain how things will work with sites that use IP address verification to control sessions... so I'll have to wait and see.
I don't use VoIP and don't run a server from home but so far I can say that I am quite pleased... I hope this review helps somebody else.
******************* FOLLOW-UP TWO MONTHS LATER *****************
I've had enough time with the Netgear FVS124G to discover its warts... simply put... protocol binding does NOT work, at least when you're trying to bind a service to a specific wan port and destination network... so far I've been elevated to Level 3 support with no resolution... I'm sure that "level 3" just means the guy in the next cubicle but it sounds impressive... FYI, for anyone in a similar situation I'm using firmware 1.33... I would still recommend the Netgear as long as your routing needs don't get *too* sophisticated... and if the Netgear ironed out the bugs in its firmware it would be perfect... the only other device I've found that performs the same features and more is the PepLink Balance 200... but it costs four times as much!

Cisco ASA 5510 Appliance - security appliance ( ASA5510-BUN-K9 )
Average Reviews:

I've dealt with 4 of these and all I can say is be very weary of upgrading if you are switching these out from a PIX. The PIX 6.x series software were so robust and stable. Now that they retired that line and started the ASA's with the 7.x/8.x code, they are prone to massive bugs and it takes a lot of wasted time researching Cisco articles to find all the tweaks and fixes to make them operational.
Specifically, after switching out our PIX to these newer Cisco ASA models, nothing but problems with massive VPN fragmentation and obscure packet dropping unrelated to ACLs. I had to go back to the PIX at one site due to too many problems with DNS lookups/simple web browsing/FTP connections. I feel they branched out with too many versions of their software images and failed to develop one stable version. Also, the java GUI is a joke, guessing it was an attempt at making it friendlier to configure/monitor but just fails in every aspect.

I used to be a big proponent of Netgear. Not anymore. First off, after reading the package on the VPN box, I believed the software client was included, but no. Once I figured that out, I bought the software, which costs more than the router. After a week of hacking, I finally got the software to work, on one out of 4 machines. One machine hard re-boots if you try any kind of network activity once the VPN is connected. I've disabled everything I can think of, it just won't work. It won't work with Vista either, no word from Netgear on a date. All other VPN software has to be un-installed, so forget using one machine to connect to a Netgear, Watchguard, Cisco, etc. vpn.
Very frustrating software.

This little guy is doing exactly as promised. I'm mainly using it for the parental controls, as it allows me to regulate access from any pc on my network without having to install *any* software on the computers (to get the antivirus and I think the popup blocker you need to install the the thin client, but for the firewall, parental control and I think some of the other things you don't need to install *anything* - note that they don't tell you this straight out, but if you look through DLink's support pages, it's all there).
I can't confirm the problems with tech support below, I had a problem where my unit wasn't updating - I emailed tech support and got a phone call (!!) back the next day. I spent about an hour on the phone with some very knowledgeable guy who was most assuredly American and we eventually got things sorted out (I know this is unusual, I figure I got lucky here).
Note that the 4 pc limit is for machines that you want to configure individually; if you set "client security" to low, you get the parental controls & firewall for as many PCs as your network can handle (each PC then defaults to your "local network profile") There are other (free) hardware or software solutions for firewalls, but having the parental stuff w/o having to install & configure a software package on each machine is *majorly* cool. There are four desktops and multiple laptops hanging around my house, this way I know that nobody's going to get any surfing surprises on any of the machines.
Four stars instead of five because the parental stuff is pretty aggressive, I've had to spend a lot of time fine tuning it. But I suppose that's better than the opposite.

I've applied the new flash upgrade, and performance is still quite good. Most of my comments from January still apply. Setup is quick, Citrix & terminal services work without modification, and I can connect to my main office via Cisco VPN client. Games are still working too.
As with most vendors, I suspect you'll have better compatibility if you use a Netgear WiFi NIC with this unit. I can get it to work with a Cisco Aironet NIC, but I cannot get WPA encryption to work. WEP (for what it's worth) works, but I'll probably have to spring for the corresponding Netgear NIC if I want to move to WPA.
The print server took a hit with the flash upgrade, however. Now it will only work as long as the PCs using it never reboot. If they do, you lose the connection to the print server until the firewall is rebooted. Tech support has been, um, less than helpful in resolving the issue. For that reason, my rating still stands at 4 stars. I strongly recommend you check the printer compatibility list on Netgear's site before you count on this as a print server.
A couple of other notes:
- The firewall is solid. I'm a networking guy, and I've tried to hack my way in a couple of times. Nothing's perfect, but this is a good solution in the home or very small business market. The worst I've been able to do against this unit is a denial of service, which disabled the Internet connection to my home network until I rebooted the unit.
- If you plan to use MSN Messenger 6.2 and/or Windows XP's Remote Assistance, you'll need to enable UPnP on this unit, which is a bit annoying, but more of a Microsoft issue.
- The e-mail logging is VASTLY improved over that of the previous flash. My logs are much more manageable, and the number of false-positive security alert messages is minimal.
- You can now create up to two remote access VPN tunnels with the new flash. I tried it and it works, although as a home user I can't imagine ever needing that feature. Difficult to set up, though, so unless you have a solid understanding of IPSEC VPN protocols, good luck.
Still, I believe this is a good unit for a home office. For me, combining the functions of print server, wireless access point, and hardware firewall into a single device make it worth the price.

The NETGEAR FWG114P ProSafe 802.11g Wireless VPN Firewall 4-Port 10/100 Switch with USB Server is a mouthful to say but provides your business with a router, switch, print server, wireless access point, and firewall. Instead of multiple devices and a tangle of wires, the FWG114P is all you need.
Wired and Wireless Connectivity The FWG114P can connect up to 253 users onto the LAN, including 64 wireless users, to share a single broadband connection. Built in to the router is a 4-port 10/100 switch for up to four connections, as well as an 802.11g wireless access point. The wireless network supports speeds up to 54 Mbps and there is a detachable 5 dBi antenna included.
A USB port allows you to connect a printer to the network that multiple users can share simultaneously. An RS-232 serial port provides a backup connection in case the main network connection fails. A row of LED lets you know the status of the network at a glance.
High-class Security For more security than just a simple NAT router, the FVG318 offers significantly more protection. It provides: a Stateful Packet Inspection (SPI) firewall to prevent Denial of Service attacks, an Intrusion Detection System (IDS), the ability to block Java/URL/ActiveX based on extension, and FTP/SMTP/RPC program filtering.
The FWG114P supports two simultaneous VPN tunnels to protect links between remote locations, encrypting the data between them. The wireless network is protected by 40/64-bit and 128-bit WEP encryption as well as WPA.
Easy Setup Even with all the functionality the FWG114P provides, NETGEAR makes setup a breeze with the intuitive Smart Wizard that automatically detects the ISP connection and adjusts your configuration accordingly.
The NETGEAR FWG114P ProSafe 802.11g Wireless VPN Firewall 4-Port 10/100 Switch with USB Server is backed by a 3-year warranty.

Netgear VPN01L Vpn Client 1 User Review

I purchased several copies of this product. They were intended to connect remote employees to Netgear's FVL328 router. Needless to say it was extremely difficult and time consuming to setup. And I consider myself highly competent in Server-Client network setup and configuration. FVL328 supports Dynamic DNS services, but the Client Software or FVL328 documentation says nothing of such setup. In fact it is full of typos and inconsistencies. By secondguessing the online posted manual for FVL328 (make sure you get the latest one) and using my experience I was able to connect to the FVL328. Then we upgraded the McAfee Viruscan from 7.0 to 8.0. Client computers (WinXP or Win2K) started to crash to Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). Clean installs and reinstalls in various order did not hel either. Mcafee has this bug in their knowledgebase and said that the SafeNet SoftRemote software (OEMed by Netgear as Prosafe VPN Client) release 10.1 had this issue but was corrected in release 10.3.5. Netgear does not even want to provide an update to this and is still under release 10.1.1 for 2.5 years. So either buy SafeNet SoftRemote or do not relly on Mcafee, hince the 2 stars

Cisco ASA 5505 Security Appliance 10 Review

Cisco ASA 5505 Security Appliance 10
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros:
* Very stable. Many home and even business grade Firewalls will occasionally start acting up and have to be rebooted, but the ASA is completely solid.
* 8 port switch w/ 2 PoE ports is great for things like IP Phones and Wireless Access Points.

* AnyConnect SSL VPN with 2 client licenses included is a great value. This lets me access my home network from work, despite them requiring a proxy server.
* Supports Spanning Tree and Rapid Spanning Tree, allowing you to build redundant uplinks to STP compatible switches.
* 256 MB RAM and 128 MB of flash is plenty of Memory for future software.
* Tons of VPN options - Straight IPSec, DMVPN, L2TP, SSL, AnyConnect, etc. The IPSec VPN is support on the iPhone, so it's pretty cool to be able to access my home network from my phone.
Cons:
* High learning curve, especially if you don't have previous experience with Cisco PIX or routers. Even using the Java-based ASDM, it can take a few hours of training to find your way. Also, ASDM is not compatible with the latest version of Java (you'll get an 'unconnected sockets' message).
* Only supports 1 internal VLAN with default license. This is fine for most setups, but disappointing since the Cisco routers will do at least 2 VLANs. It prevents, for example, having separate VLANs for voice and wireless, or creating a DMZ.
* No built-in Wireless option. Check out the 870 or 1800 routers if this is important. Adding a Wireless AP is easy though, especially with the PoE ports.
* No support for DHCP reservations. I like to configure Servers and Printers this way, and can't find any good reason Cisco wouldn't support it like they do on their routers and Layer 3 switches.
Summary - A great value as a SOHO Firewall and VPN Appliance. The ASA 5505 is priced the same as the PIX 501 was, but adds 2 PoE ports and SSL VPN Capabilities. The biggest drawbacks I can see are the high learning curve, no built-in Wireless, and lack of DHCP reservations. Before purchasing, you'll probably want to take a look at the 870 series routers since they may be a better choice depending on your requirements.

Netgear FVX538 ProSafe VPN Firewall 200 Review

Netgear FVX538 ProSafe VPN Firewall 200
Average Reviews:

While I have been very pleased with the performance of this product, configuration and setup was very easy, and even updates to the device are easy to do, it's not reliable.
It seems that every 3 or 4 days I lose connection to the Internet. This is a 7 PC network, couple of servers. There really isn't huge bandwidth being used. But it is like it gets frozen - you can't ping it, you can't get to anything on the outside like the gateway or DNS servers, and a simple power reset gets it working again.
Nothing is in the log, I have to believe this is some sort of firmware problem. I have checked all the ideas on Netgear's site without help. I know at least some of the time it freezes during the middle of the night, when no one is using it. Could it be getting zapped from the outside somehow? But it sure is not reliable, I can't recommend it.
